Motivation Assessment Template

A motivation assessment is a structured diagnostic that identifies which internal and external factors genuinely drive a person's engagement — such as achievement, recognition, autonomy, growth, and purpose. Results are plotted on a radar chart so individuals and their managers can see the full motivational profile at once, not just a single dominant trait.

Three moments deliver the highest return: during onboarding, before a retention conversation with an at-risk employee, and at the start of a performance review cycle. Using it reactively after someone has already disengaged is still useful for diagnosis, but proactive use during onboarding prevents the misalignment from developing in the first place.

An engagement survey measures how engaged someone currently feels — it's a temperature check. A motivation assessment measures what structurally drives engagement for that individual regardless of current mood or circumstance. The distinction matters in practice: engagement surveys tell you there's a problem; motivation profiles tell you what specifically to change to fix it.

Five to seven dimensions is the practical range — enough to produce a meaningful radar chart without overwhelming respondents. The core five are achievement, recognition, autonomy, growth, and purpose. Adding affiliation and security rounds out the profile for roles where team belonging or stability are primary drivers, such as operations and customer-facing positions.

It can — especially in small businesses where managers rarely have formal retention frameworks. When motivation profiles are captured at onboarding and revisited every six months, patterns emerge: a purpose-driven employee underutilized on routine tasks, or an achievement-oriented hire with no clear progression path. Those mismatches are fixable once they're visible, and fixing them is far cheaper than replacing the person.
